Due to the large influx of immigrants, mostly from Asian countries, Mississauga is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada. Being home to more than 18,000 companies has helped Mississauga to remain debt free as a city since 1978.
Mississauga is a center for industry especially the warehousing, manufacturing, and petroleum refinement in the pharmaceutical, electronic equipment, and chemical sectors. It is also the location of one of the largest financial districts in Canada which is home to the corporate offices of more than 50 Fortune 500 companies including Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Pepsi, General Electric, and Wal-Mart. In an effort to create an independent image and provide housing to its expanding population, Mississauga, ON has also turned its sights on construction, with the winning eccentric condo tower designs of an international architectural competition expected to be completed in 2010.

This city is unique in that is doesn't just have the traditional types of neighbourhood you would expect to find in a city of its size. These traditional types that are most popular with homebuyers are: dense downtown neighbourhoods containing mostly multi-family housing and the more sprawling suburban areas with larger lot sizes and detached single family homes. Mississauga has many representatives in these areas, but it also has something not many cities do: neighbourhoods with a small-town feel. This is due to the fact that Mississauga, Ontario was created from the amalgamation of many smaller communities.

More well-off home searchers may prefer Lorne Park, which requires its residents to keep up not just their homes but the surrounding parkland. The Erindale neighbourhood is a historical village, while Streetsville is a small town tucked inside a big city.
